Managed Databases

Managed Databases in South Africa

Every way to get a database on NewHost: a database plan for standalone MySQL or PostgreSQL databases, databases included with every app plan, MySQL with web hosting and MS SQL with Windows hosting. Each database gets its own user and a strong generated password.

Features

MySQL and PostgreSQL

Database plans offer the engines listed on each plan; app databases use the engines your app's server offers. MS SQL comes with Windows hosting.

One click, credentials once

Each database gets its own user and a generated strong password, shown once. Reset it whenever you need a new one.

Automatic backups

Database plans back up each database automatically, daily or weekly as the plan says. Restore or download a backup yourself, or copy backups to your own storage.

South African servers

Databases run on NewHost's servers in South Africa, close to your apps and visitors.

Locked, never lost

If a renewal goes unpaid the database user is locked, the data is kept, and paying unlocks it with the same password.

Upgrade any time

Move to a bigger plan at once (you pay the difference for the rest of the period); a smaller plan applies at renewal.

Databases included with hosting

With Node.js and Next.js app plans

Create databases on your app's server from the app's page, using the engines that server offers.

  • Starter (R79/month)1 database
  • Developer (R199/month)3 databases
  • Business (R479/month)10 databases
  • Agency (R1 199/month)40 databases
App plans

MySQL with web hosting

PHP and WordPress websites on NewHost web hosting create MySQL databases in their hosting account, up to the hosting plan's limit.

MS SQL Server with Windows hosting

ASP.NET sites on NewHost Windows hosting create MS SQL databases from the site's page, up to the Windows plan's number.

Security

Every database has its own user with a generated strong password that NewHost shows once. Reset it from the dashboard at any time; a reset ends connections that use the old password.

Connection details

The dashboard shows the host, port, database name and user, and a ready connection URL to put in your app's environment variables.

Backups and restores

Each database on a plan is backed up between 01:00 and 05:00, daily or weekly as the plan says, and kept for its number of days. Back up on demand too, restore a backup yourself, download it, or copy backups to your own S3, FTP or SFTP storage.

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose a plan

Pick a database plan and name your first database and its engine.

  2. 2

    Pay the invoice

The database is created as soon as the invoice is paid; open Databases to see its password, once.

  3. 3

    Connect

Use the host, port, user and password in your app's settings. Add more databases up to your plan's number.

Frequently asked questions

Which database engines can I use?

Database plans list their engines: MySQL / MariaDB and PostgreSQL, and MS SQL Server on the MS SQL plans when they are listed on this page. App databases use the engines your app's server offers. MS SQL Server also comes with Windows hosting, and MySQL with web hosting.

Where do MS SQL Server databases run?

On NewHost's Windows servers with Microsoft SQL Server, in South Africa. Each database gets its own SQL login that owns that database only and can't see other databases. Connect over TCP with SQL Server Authentication and Encrypt=True; the dashboard shows .NET, Node.js and SSMS examples. The SQL Server version and edition depend on the server: ask support before relying on edition-specific features.

Where do I find my database password?

It's shown once: when you create a database, or, for the first database of a new plan, the first time you open it on the Databases page. Store it in your app's environment variables. Lost it? Reset the password to get a new one.

How do I connect from my app?

Use the host, port, database name, user and password shown in the dashboard; the dashboard also shows them as a connection URL. Put them in your app's environment variables rather than in your code.

How many databases do I get?

Every app plan includes databases next to your apps too: 1 on Starter, 3 on Developer, 10 on Business and 40 on Agency.

Are my databases backed up?

Database plans are backed up automatically, daily or weekly as the plan says, and kept for the plan's number of days. Restore or download a backup yourself from the database's Backups page on the Databases page.

What happens if I don't pay a renewal?

The plan becomes past due, and 7 days after the renewal is due it is suspended: the database users (MS SQL Server: the logins) are locked so connections stop, and your data is kept. Paying the invoice unlocks them with the same passwords.

Is the storage a hard limit?

For MySQL and PostgreSQL it is the plan's allowance across all its databases: if they grow past it we may ask you to move to a bigger plan; nothing is deleted. Each MS SQL Server database is capped at the plan's storage by SQL Server itself.

Can I connect from an app hosted elsewhere?

Use the host and port shown in the dashboard. If a connection from outside NewHost is refused, contact support before relying on it: remote access is set per server.

Can I change plans later?

Yes. An upgrade applies at once and you pay only the difference for the rest of your period; a cheaper plan applies at your next renewal. Your databases stay.
