Hosting billed in rand means your monthly cost stays the same regardless of the exchange rate, your local card or EFT goes through without foreign-transaction trouble, and you receive a South African VAT invoice your accountant can process. For a small business, those three things often matter as much as the technical features. This guide explains the practical difference between rand and dollar billing, and when dollar billing is still fine.
1. The exchange rate changes your bill, not your usage
When a provider charges in US dollars, your bank converts each payment at the rate on the day. If the rand weakens, your hosting costs more in rand, even though you are using exactly the same resources.
That makes budgeting harder:
- Your monthly cost is a range, not a number.
- Annual renewals can be a surprise if the rate has moved since last year.
- Client quotes that include hosting may no longer cover the cost later in the year.
For agencies that bundle hosting into client retainers, this is a real risk: you quote in rand, but pay in dollars.
With rand billing, a R249 plan costs R249 plus VAT this month, next month and at renewal (unless the plan price itself changes, which a local provider would announce in advance).
2. Card declines and bank fees
Paying foreign providers with a South African card can cause friction:
- Declined recurring payments. Some cards, especially debit cards and business cards with controls, block foreign or online recurring transactions until you enable them.
- Foreign transaction fees. Many banks add a fee on top of the converted amount. Check your bank's current fee schedule.
- Card expiry and replacement. When a card is replaced, a declined renewal can suspend your service if you miss the email.
A local provider typically offers payment methods that South Africans already use: local card processing, instant EFT, and bank EFT.
3. VAT invoices your accountant can use
South African VAT is 15%. A local, VAT-registered hosting provider charges VAT and issues a tax invoice with the details SARS requires. If your business is VAT-registered, a valid tax invoice lets you claim the VAT as input tax.
Foreign providers are different. Some are registered for South African VAT as suppliers of electronic services and charge it; others are not. The invoices are usually in dollars, and your bookkeeper has to convert and record them. It is manageable, but it is admin you would rather avoid on small monthly amounts.

- Pay yearly to lock in the price and simplify admin.
- Quote clients accurately when you resell or bundle hosting.

5. Usage-based billing adds another variable
Many global platforms combine a plan fee with usage charges: bandwidth, build minutes, function calls or compute time. That can be efficient, but it adds a second variable on top of the exchange rate. A traffic spike, a bot crawl or a bug that loops requests can push a bill up unexpectedly.

When dollar billing is fine
Rand billing is not the only factor. Dollar billing is perfectly reasonable when:
- Your revenue is in dollars, so costs and income move together.
- You need a specific global service with no local equivalent.
- The amounts are small and currency swings do not matter to you.
- Your audience is international and a global platform serves them better.
Plenty of South African companies happily pay some providers in dollars. The point is to choose it deliberately.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my overseas hosting bill change every month?
Because it is charged in a foreign currency and converted at the exchange rate on the payment date. If the provider also charges for usage, changes in traffic or compute add to the variation.
Can I claim VAT on hosting from an overseas provider?
